Montreal was the biggest city and economic centre of Canada up until the seventies, and is now the 2nd biggest city in Canada after Toronto, 5 hours drive to the south west. The downtown core of Montreal is at the base of Mount Royal, and has many notable skyscrapers which interestingly are not allowed to be higher than Mount Royal. There is a massive underground network with hundreds of shops and services. Old Montreal is an historic area located southeast of the modern area of downtown which is very charming and has many attractions including a great many historic skyscrapers, cobble-stone streets and horse-drawn carriages. The Montreal Stock Exchange is the oldest in Canada, reflecting the long history of this North American City with a distinctively European flavour. |
